Alberta Team Handball Federation (ATHF) is the leading organization for handball in Alberta. ATHF became an official organization in 1976. Since 1976, ATHF has become Canada’s most prestigious province in handball, winning 20 national championships in the last 10 years. Winning is just a part of our culture; we’ve also sent 30 players to play on the national team and 15 professionally in Europe. Final membership count last year was approximately 4,600.
As the official federation of Alberta, ATHF is responsible for the development of team handball in the province. The main responsibilities are: developing referees, coaches, athletes, and playing opportunities for all ages and skills. ATHF has one employee that reports to an eight-person board. Through out the year ATHF organizes 6 leagues, 3-5 tournaments, and hosts a variety of events. ATHF partners with Alberta School Athletic Association, Elk Island public schools, and Edmonton public school boards for high school and junior high.
Alberta Team Handball Federation strives to become the best and biggest handball organization in North America. The purpose of Alberta Team Handball Federation is to grow the sport all over the province by providing opportunities and quality resources to all of our members.
ATHF acknowledges that the province of Alberta is located on Treaty 4, Treaty 6, Treaty 7, Treaty 8 and Treaty 10 territories, and respects the histories, languages, and cultures of the First Nations, the Métis, the Inuit, and all of the First People's of Canada who share a history and a deep connection with this land, whose footsteps have marked these lands for centuries and whose presence continues to enrich our vibrant community.

The strategy to develop membership is based on the following key principles:
1. Membership growth is the result of retaining
existing members and attracting new members.
2. Growth requires investment in strategies to develop new members and customers.
3. Tracking memberships - who stays, who joins, demographics of membership, patterns of growth, etc. - is essential to evaluating growth and the success of growth strategies.
4. Everyone - Association Members and Local Affiliates - benefits from membership development and needs to collaborate on strategies for growth.
5. Members are fundamentally responsible for developing their sport. Fees are an important way of ensuring the organization's capacity to develop the sport.
